Occupational Therapists (OT) are healthcare workers that help improve the quality of life of their patients. They work with a wide range of people who have injuries, illnesses, and conditions such as autism spectrum disorder.  An occupational therapist’s main goal is to help their patient become independent and regain their confidence in day-to-day activities with their condition or illness. When working with autistic patients, they will assess various aspects of their functioning. Using occupational therapy services for autism spectrum disorder, may help alleviate symptoms. They also may collaborate with other professionals, including mental health specialists, to augment care. Some of the most common symptoms an occupational therapist may treat for autism spectrum disorder:

Sensory Difficulties

Autistic people can become overwhelmed by their senses and cannot process them properly.  Sensory overload can cause pain, discomfort, irritability, and meltdowns. An occupational therapist may help alleviate symptoms and develop coping strategies to lessen discomfort.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills focus on any movement or coordination of the small muscles in our hands, wrists, and fingers. Examples of fine motor skills that autism might cause difficulties with are eating, dressing, using the bathroom, writing, etc.

Communication Skills

Occupational therapists can help the autistic population improve their way of speech for both verbal and non-verbal speakers. They can help them develop confidence and advance their ability to communicate properly.

Regulating Emotions (self-regulation)

There may be comorbid behavioral disorders in children and adults that may impair an individual’s ability to regulate their emotions. They can become overwhelmed and impetuously respond to emotional stimuli with negative behaviors. Occupational therapists can help individuals regulate their emotion and release it in a positive way resulting in progressive behaviors.

Attention Span

Autistic people may have difficulties maintaining attention spans. Occupational therapists can help them improve issues focusing in school, at work, or on any daily task. Depending on their focus level, they may benefit from taking an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Test.
